Kavi Perera is the latest local 'graduate; from the Rotary Youth Leadership Award Scheme (RYLA).
Pictured with his father and Rotarian, Chairman Tony Webb, Community Service chair, Hilda Willams and father Indika Perera, Kavi spoke to Ashtead Rotary Club members at a recent club meeting about his experiences at the RYLA programme held at the Outdoor Education Centre at High Ashurst in Mickleham.
Kavi was sponsored by Ashtead Rotary Club to attend the intensive leadership development programme - which is organised by Rotary clubs and districts.

The program is designed for young people aged 14-30 and aims to help participants develop their leadership skills through a variety of activities, workshops, and interactions with community leaders and peers.
RYLA events can take different forms, such as one-day seminars, three-day retreats, or weeklong camps, depending on the needs of the community. Participants get to build communication and problem-solving skills, learn from inspirational speakers, and form lasting friendships.
Kavi said, "RYLA reminded me of something very important: leadership is not just about personal success, but about serving others and making a meaningful difference in the community. It’s about “service above self,” a core principle of Rotary that I will always carry with me.
"By the end of the program, I felt more confident, focused, and ready to take on leadership roles. I gained lifelong friendships, a strong network, and a renewed sense of purpose. RYLA showed me that leadership is not a destination, but a journey—one of constant learning and giving back," he said.
