Ashtead Rotary Club Members were recently invited to an open evening at Ashtead Cricket Club as part of its effort to get to know the local community - and for Rotary Members to get to know the Club.
And what a great deal there was to hear, from a highly successful sport club that not only has a broad mix of men and women in its teams but is also achieving great success on the field.
The junior section alone has 25 boys and 14 girls’ teams with over 340 matches currently scheduled to be played across Surrey – and that doesn’t include 13 cup competitions.
In recent years the women and girls' section has been growing steadily having gone from 42 members to 135 over the past eight years. As the younger members progress so they go on to join the senior women’s team, with a further four scheduled to move up in 2026. This year Ashtead has also joined the Women’s Hardball and Softball Leagues.
Success on the field meant that in 2024 Ashtead's women and girls won the U14 Tier 2 League, the U15 Hundred and were Surrey Slam Plate Champions.
Of course, Ashtead Cricket Club would not be a thriving Club without it’s male members with the senior teams comprising of four Saturday XIs competing in the Surrey Cricket Championship with the 1st XI in top Tier Premier Division - the highest level of club cricket played in Surrey.
Ashtead Cricket Club's 1st squad has four contracted professional cricketers available at certain periods during the season including Dom Sibley Surrey CCC; Mark Stoneman, Hampshire CCC; Ben Geddes, Middx CCC; and Sean Hunt, Sussex CCC; plus an overseas professional from New Zealand, Simon Keene, who is contracted with Auckland Cricket.
This combines with the many young players who have developed through teh Club's structured junior pathway system into the 1st XI. Additionally the Club has a 4th XI competing in the Surrey Downs League and 5th XI development side.
